The short version: your family's data belongs to your family. We can't read it, we don't collect it, and there is nothing to sell.
Momma Bear shares location, place alerts, and safety status between the members of one family circle — the people you deliberately invite. That's the whole product.
Location, the display name and picture you choose, device battery level, a device security score, SOS status, your family's name and photo, the shared places your family defines, and items on your family's shared list. This data exists so your family can see it. No account is created; the app has no sign-up, no email field, and no password.
Microphone. If you choose to speak an item onto the family list, the app listens only after you tap the microphone and stops when you tap again, and the words are worked out on your phone. Audio is never sent anywhere — on phones that can't do this on the device, the button isn't offered.
Family data is encrypted on your phone with keys generated on your family's own devices (AES-256-GCM via Apple's CryptoKit). The encrypted data is stored in Apple's iCloud (CloudKit) purely so your family's devices can exchange it. The keys never leave your family: they travel only inside the QR invite one family member shows another.
We — the developer — operate no servers, and we do not hold your family's keys. We cannot read your family's locations, names, places, or list, and neither can anyone who isn't in your family. What encryption does not hide is the fact that records exist and when they change — the kind of information any storage service can see. This is why the App Store privacy label says "Data Not Collected": nothing is collected by us.
Momma Bear is a family app managed by the heads of the household (parents). A child's device joins only when a parent invites it with a QR code, and a child's data is visible only inside that family, protected by the same family-held encryption — with one exception a parent controls: friend sharing, where a child can share their location with a named friend for a limited time, only after a parent approves it. That share uses its own separate key, ends when it expires or is stopped, and can be withdrawn by a parent at any time. We collect no data from anyone, children included.
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted at this address with an updated effective date.
