Momma Bear is a private family location & safety toolkit by M4Quick Studios.
A head of your family (a parent) opens their Den tab, taps Invite by QR, and you scan that code from Family → Join a family → Scan. Joining by QR is what delivers your family's encryption keys to your phone — a typed code alone can't join a secured family.
So your family's map stays current and place alerts work while the app is closed. iOS shows you periodic reminders that the app uses background location; you can change the permission any time in Settings.
Their row in the Den now says why, in the phone's own words. The usual causes are: Location not set to Always, Background App Refresh turned off, or Precise Location off — that last one makes someone show as "out & about" while they're at home. On their phone: Settings → Momma Bear. A phone that's switched off, has no signal, or had the app force-quit will also go quiet until it's opened again.
Safety → Alerts. Everyone sets their own: Everything, Important only (the default), or Emergencies only, plus quiet hours and a one-tap "quiet for now" that wears off by itself. SOS and a walk running late always come through. Quieting alerts never stops your location being shared.
Places → Recent alerts lists everything the app has told you. Tap This one was wrong to see the place that sent it — wrong alerts almost always come from a place drawn too big, pinned in the wrong spot, or overlapping another place.
It switches the whole family's records to end-to-end encryption with keys only your family holds. Every family phone should be on a current version and joined by QR first. New families are encrypted automatically from the start; if yours isn't, the Den says so at the top.
Crash detection is off by default and best-effort. It alerts your family only — it is not a substitute for calling 911.
